Things That Stay

Some things leave with them. Some things stay long after they're gone.

Things That Stay

After you left,

there were endless days

where I was lost

in a familiar haze.

Your faint scent

on the pillowcase,

the broken ornaments

in the fireplace.

The dip in the mattress

where you once lay,

your half-smoked joint

in the dirty ashtray.

The text messages proclaiming

I LOVE YOU,

the picture on the fridge

of our favourite view.

The receipt from our last dinner

where you proposed,

the crack in my heart

when your lies were exposed.

The echoes of your pleading

for me to understand,

the weight of the ring

on my left hand.

The pain of the fantasy

that you had me believe...

That's the thing with memories,

They just don't leave!

If this one found you at the right time…

Maybe you'll find something in these, too.
